At Opaheke School, students are encouraged to grow in responsibility:

For Junior children in the first years of school our teachers concentrate on teaching basic strategies and skills of:

  • Learning to read
  • Learning to write
  • Learning mathematics
  • Learning to be responsible for themselves and their belongings

 

For our senior students besides the prescribed curriculum area there are additional programs such as:

  • Outdoor education experiences for Year 6 and Year 8 students
  • Overseas languages for Year 7 and Year 8 students
  • Enrichment programmes
  • DARE programme as a part of the Health Physical Education Curriculum.
  • A wide range of sporting opportunities including participating in Counties Zone sporting occasions
  • Specialised reading assistance programmes for students at risk with reading

 

If our students have learned to read by Year 4 they can read to learn as their experiences widen. To assist our pupils with literacy and research a first class library was opened in 2005. This provides opportunity for all to discover the joys of reading as well as searching for information.

The role of Information and Communication Technology is rapidly expanding. A purpose build suite with 30 computers opened in 2005. It was designed in order to equip our students with the essential skills and abilities required in the 21st Century workplace.

Despite the rapid social changes, there are basic values and standards of a moral kind that will remain unchanged. These standards should not merely reflect what occurs in our wider society today. Much of this School’s day to day functioning is based on behaviours such as respect for others, honesty, courtesy and consideration. Our School cannot function apart from its local community and the work of local residents. Where possible, local resource people, local elders, grandparents, supporters of the School and places of local significance will be an integral part of School programmes. As Education for a useful, enriching life is the shared responsibility of the home, school and community. The most productive learning opportunities for our students will occur when these three groups are working in harmony. The culture of the school, the tone, the human relationships that exist and the extent to which all at this School believe their efforts to be valued and important – all are factors in the development of well educated young adults of whom we can be proud.
