Physical Education

Health and Physical Education play a significant role in delivering a well-rounded program at Ōpaheke School. We recognise the importance of regular physical activity in fostering personal and physical development among our students.
Our program is thoughtfully designed to offer a diverse range of learning experiences in both mainstream and lesser-known sports. From Athletics (Whakarākai) and Swimming (Kauhoe) to Rugby (Whutupaoro) and Soccer (Whutupaoro whānui), our students engage in a variety of sports that cater to their interests and abilities. Furthermore, during class sports sessions and lunchtime, we provide opportunities for participation in less traditional sports such as Indoor Hockey (Haki), Ki o Rahi and Volleyball (Pōtiki), just to name a few.
Central to our physical education program is the belief that every child should actively participate in regular physical activity. We actively encourage this attitude by inviting external agencies to showcase their sports to our students. By fostering community links, we empower our students to explore sports that resonate with them and inspire them to lead active lifestyles.
In Years 5-8, Ōpaheke School collaborates with North Counties Sports Association, a cluster of schools with whom we work closely and compete against in the Counties Zone competition. Exceptional achievements at the Counties Zone level open doors for our students to participate in the prestigious Auckland Districts Championship events. Our dedicated senior school teachers encourage students to try a wide variety of sporting options, aiming to present opportunities that may lead them to community sports groups.
We invite you to become part of our vibrant and inclusive community at Ōpaheke School, where Health and Physical Education provide a solid foundation for your child's holistic development.
Ōpaheke Netball Club

Ōpaheke students from year 1 to 8 are able to join the Ōpaheke Netball Club. Our student can play in the following grades:
- Future Ferns which caters for Year 1 to 6 students (girls and boys)
- Intermediate which caters for Year 7 and 8 students (girls only)
Registrations open late February with games beginning at the beginning of April. Students are placed into teams according to their age and ability. There is a Netball fee which is required to be paid. Our PTA and Board do partially fund some of the costs to cover the Papakura Netball Association fee, umpire costs, uniforms and gear etc. We do rely on whānau support for coach and manager roles in each team. Practise is held at the school once a week after school hours and games run at the Papakura Netball Centre on a Saturday morning. Games are not played during school holidays or on public holidays.
